Summer Planting Trio
Spectacular scented summer Lilies
January offers the perfect window for planting lily bulbs. In any relatively mild spell, plant them into pots or borders, avoiding soil that's frozen or overly wet. The magnificent Lilium 'Muscadet' brings star quality to both containers and garden beds.
Bee-magnet Agastache to flower all summer long
Carefully chosen to grow happily alongside the 'Muscadet' lilies, Agastache 'Rose Mint' brings months of colour, fragrance and pollinator activity. Plant it now into well-drained soil or containers, and it will reward you with aromatic foliage and a long succession of rosy-pink flower spikes from early summer onwards. A brilliant partner for lilies, it adds movement, scent and a constant hum of bees to your display.
Tumbling clouds of Erigeron
Completing this trio of beautifully balanced plants, Erigeron karvinskianus brings a soft, airy lightness. Plant it now into well-drained soil or containers, and it will spill over edges, soften paths and flower tirelessly for months. Its white-to-blush daisies draw in pollinators and add gentle, meadow-like movement that makes the whole planting feel effortlessly alive.
Celebrate Spring
Cheerful Creamy Paperwhite Daffodils
Even if you didn't get around to planting any spring bulbs, these creamy Paperwhite daffodils will burst into flower within 8–10 weeks, giving you a bright, fragrant indoor display showing off all the best of the spring season. Start them off somewhere cool and bright — they can even begin outdoors if the temperatures stay above freezing — and then enjoy their elegant blooms inside. They will sit beautifully alongside your October-box crocuses and November-box dwarf irises, for some unbeatable early-season colour.
The First Job of the Year for Vegetable Sowing
Sweet, Delicious Sungold F1 Tomatoes
Whilst you don't want to fill every windowsill with seedlings, it's well worth making an early start with Sungold F1 tomatoes. A small January sowing gives you a head-start on these famously sweet, golden fruits, ensuring strong plants ready to romp away once the light levels rise. Sow sparingly in a warm, bright spot indoors, potting on as they grow, and you'll be rewarded with an early crop of the juiciest cherry tomatoes of summer.
